The "useless" spaces

Was vernünftig ist, das ist wirklich, und was wirklich ist, das ist vernünftig.

What is rational is real; and what is real is rational.

节选自 Elements of the Philosophy of Right

作 Hegal 译 S. W. Dyde

神秀禅师:

身是菩提树, The body is a Bodhi tree,

心如明镜台。 The mind a standing mirror bright.

时时勤拂拭, At all times polish it diligently,

勿使惹尘埃。 And let no dust alight.

慧能禅师:

菩提本无树, Bodhi is fundamental without any tree;

明镜亦非台。The bright mirror is also not a stand.

本来无一物, Fundamentally there is not a single thing —

何处惹尘埃。 Where could any dust be attracted?

Dialogue from Huineng

Huineng:638-713, Tang Dynasty

I cannot hide my fascination over the artificial inhumane spaces

I guess, overall, I cannot become a pure breed architect

The education from Fine Arts background haunt me everyday in my architecture training

What is habitable and what is inhabitable

Why is architecture always human-centric?

Probably now I’m starting to sound like a complete lunatic, probably I am.

Spaces could be more than shelters

A space that encaptures uncertainty could be identified as “alive”.

From human perspectives, when we cannot rationalize, we fear.

Yet they are our beloved companions, they deserve the right to be anything.

They deserve a right to be meaningful other than useful.

Their values are not to be judged by humans. Of course not me either.

It’s a time short of space for habitation in some areas. But why are we planting a problem instead of cutting off the root?

It’s a time for the discussion of space. As we do not struggle for life, but we struggle for the meaning of life, as always.

In other words, The useless space does not exist for human needs. They exist as individuals. They were born to be living for themselves.

Humans, animals, non-organisms, interact with the space. No one owns the space.

The conversation between us and the space is not what we want it to be, but what it wants to be, and how we cooperate with them to benefit from the relationship.

Do they really do nothing?

Do we even have to rationalize everything to make ourselves feel safe?

They don't have to. We don’t have to. We exist. Just enjoy.
